2006 Alumni Lecture: 'Why David Hicks will not receive a fair trial come his day in Court'

Dear all,

I wondered if anyone would be interested in attending this FREE public lecture (Registration is required: c.martin@unimelb.edu.au with "Mori" in the subject line)

Thu 6 April 2006 6pm for 6:30pm
Melbourne Law School
The University of Melbourne
185 Pelham Street, Carlton

Major Mike Mori, as a US military appointment and defence lawyer, has surprised many with his damning condemnation of the legal process that faces alleged Australian terrorist David Hicks. This lecture will explain how the established rules and procedures have removed all the typical rights and protections that should be present in any justice system. Major Mori will detail up to date information on the proposed trial proceedings and also illustrate how David Hicks will be the subject of a show trial lacking the independent checks and balances of an established justice system.

I'm planning to attend. Please let me know, by way of Commenting (below).

Keep The Heath In Heathmont

Forgot to add a heading so I had to add one. Read my blog belo!

onlycoolppl

Hey coolppls!

Don't know if this will interest any of you but thought it may be a fun thing to do together as a group.

Over the weekend of April 29th its the Heathmont Heritage Weekend - 80yrs since the opening of the railway station.

On Sat 29th between 10-11am the Heathmnt Buhlinks are planting indigenous heath and shrubs near the railway station to help maintain the area's natural character.

I'm sure you can guess...Heathmont got its name from being very hilly and covered in Heath. Canterbury rd use to be called Delaney's Rd and was the old stock route to the sheep and cattle areas in croydon. Dandenong's Creek is said mean high and lofty and they even had a dam down there where people went boating (a little upstream from H.E Parker)....can't imagine that now can you!!!!!

I'm doing one of my writing foilos for Masters on the history of my house...tracked down the builders son and the ringwood historial society are so much help! out house was built on Cham View Estate - how lovely!

So if you're keen! Bruncy/Lunch at my house afterwards.....just though it may be something nice to do. Let me know so I can tell the "heathmont Bushlinks" - its only for 1 hours out of a whole weekend!

Enjoy this weekend xxxx

Save Our ABC

Hi guys, I know this is the equivalent of spam.....(well almost).... but I'm sure the ABC has provided you all with many cherished memories throughout your childhood.

Auntie's funding is underthreat, and here's something you can do about it. It only takes 2 seconds. Let's make it to 50,000, ppl!

I've taken part in a national petition to restore the ABC's funding, and we're now aiming for a target of 50,000 signatures before it's presented in Canberra.
As it stands, 35,000 people have signed the petition in three working days. Can you help us get to 50,000 signatures by tomorrow?
http://www.getup.org.au/campaign/FundOurABC
The deal is, currently the ABC provides four national radio networks, 60 local radio stations, three internet music-based services, a free-to-air digital channel and over 1.7 million pages of online content, for about half the budget of a typical metropolitan television station.
The ABC is struggling to get by today on $264 million less in real terms than it had 20 years ago. That's why you've been hearing talk of ads on the ABC, even though the government is expecting a $9.7 billion surplus.
To change the course of the ABC's future we need to stand up in its defence.
We know that without a robust ABC, we'll lose access to a distinctly Australian voice in our media, as well as quality independent content, from news and in-depth current affairs to trustworthy children's programming.
Please join me at crucial moment in standing up for a future that includes public-driven, not profit-driven Australian media.
http://www.getup.org.au/campaign/FundOurABC
Help deliver a 50,000-strong petition before the government makes a decision that affects us all.

Thanks dudes,

French Film Festival 2006

Hi Cool People,

Looking ahead to possible 'cool' events that we could involve ourselves in, I wondered if anyone wanted to see a film that's featuring in the French Film Festival this year??

The Festival opens on Wednesday 29 March and goes through until Wednesday 12 April.

While lots of films look excellent, I think "The Plane (L'Avion)" looks pretty special.

If anyone would like to see this with me, the session time is:
Palace Balwyn (Balwyn) SAT 1 APR 12.30pm

There is another session time, but I am unavailable for that session...

If you think it sounds cool, please comment or contact me. Plus, if we go to the Festival early enough and get the 'bug' to see more French film, wee can see more of the Festival films...

More details about the Festival can be found at: http://www.frenchfilmfestival.org/tabid/294/City/Melbourne/Home.aspx

Peace.

V for, er... Thursday

Hey there cool peeps. I was hoping to host the next DVD night at my place this Thursday, but unfortunately that won't be possible (folks need their sleep before they ship off to Tazie), plus I will be rehearsing MY NEW PRODUCTION on Friday. However, all is not lost. Thursday just happens to be the opening night of the much anticipated film V FOR VENDETTA. So this is my idea, and ideas are bullet proof, this Thursday (the 30th) instead of a DVD night, we (that is anyone who'd like to go) went along to Village Cinemas in Knox Ozone and watch Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman blow up Big Ben. Comment if you're up to it and what times you'd prefer. Plus we could hang around for a bevy or two afterwards.

Rob.

The start of an era

And so begins the DVD night alternate venue age. This doesn't mean any less fun - although Eug's house is a pretty cool pad - so be prepared for a whole new set of DVD adventures at different places around the good ol' eastern suburbs.

So, this Thursday's night DVD night will be at my place in downtown Ver-mont, and all are welcome. Comment here if you'd like me to email you my adress, or just ask Eug.

Date: This Thursday, 23rd
Time: 8:30 - whatever time we get tired
Venue: My house, perhaps my courtyard if it's a clear night, so if it's not raining then rug up
Bring along any DVD's you'd like to watch (as my collection is very small), any snacks you'd like to nibble on, anything else you'd like to do, and of course yourselves.

Please reply (comments are fine) to let me know if you'll be coming along,

Erica.

No Internet :(

hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that our modem is a little routed (haha, get it: rooted/routed, and it's a router!) at the mo. So if anyone posts something cool on here, I will not be able to hear about it over the weekend, only on weekdays while I'm in at uni......

So pls ring me or something if there's anything hella-cool going down.

MEMEMEMEMEMEMEME

What were you doing 10 years ago?
I would have just started year 8. 8c all the way! (except for that stupid project we had to do about the Olympics...I never did hand it in, but being the geek I was, I got away with it all the same.......geek and the fact that it wasn't even for a specific subject....how dumb is that!?)

What were you doing one year ago?
Started 4th year uni.....not much exciting stuff, really.

Five snacks you enjoy:
Chocolate
Chocolate
Chocolate
Chocolate
Chocolate (hey, you didn't say five DIFFERENT snacks!)

Five songs to which you know all the lyrics:
hmmm....I'm not even sure there are five. I'm hopeless at lyrics...I always get the verses around the wrong way. ...Not a very good way to be when you want to be a singer. Let's see,

- Listen to the rain (don't know who it's by)
- I Will Survive (I do both the Gloria Gaynore version - from the Priscilla sound track - and the Cake version - from Fashion Nugget) (but I confess the words are sometimes around the wrong way)
- Home and Away Theme song (well, what can I say, I am MAINSTREAM after all, right, Will?)
- the Harpic Add (hey Jen, do you remember when you stole this song off me in year 7 or 8 music and I was left to sing the Neighbours song which I stuffed up completely?)

ummm.....

- I'm in the Mood For Love (at least, I know the Lyrics that Casanunda sings in the Discworld Computer Game (I'm not sure if it's I or II, definately not Noir))

Five things you would do if you were a millionare:
- Pay off Mum's house (and maybe get it painted)
- Do up my car (hey, don't groan guys, it's my hypothetical million, I can do what I want with it)
- Paint Harmers
- Travel around the world (yeah, I know, everyone puts that one, but it's something I would do)
- Invest it.....probably in Real Estate or something (gotta love that broad term 'or something')

Five bad habits:
- Biting my nails
- Biting the skin around my nails (yeah, I know, gross)
- Procrastinating
- Staying up late (yeah, that's right, I even procrastinate about going to bed)
- Day Dreaming (yes, with a capital letter Aj)

Five things you would never wear, buy or get new again:
(note to Aj: I'm answering this with by interpretation of the ambigous sentence, but feel free to read it any way you like)
- First Year astronomy textbooks
- Op shop cloths (as in, I would never buy them new again.....kind of impossible really, but there you go)
- School uniform (except at a Host Scheme party)
- g-string (they're uncomfy)
- Answer another meme (I know I'm not wearing, buying or getting it, but it's starting to shit me so I thought I'd put it down anyway)

The meme stuff:
hey, call me a spoil sport, but I refuse to do the meme stuff.....refer to Erica's or Aj's blogs if you wanna comply.

new beginnings...endings...day of mourning...who knows what awaits us?

Ok. I s'pose you're wondering what the title of this post is all about.

Well, hmm......how to begin? I should just come right out and say it. Due to my honours study and our having only 1 TV (thus causing us to unintentionally invade the whole house, both upstairs and down, rather than just half) and Thursday occuring in the middle of mum's 3-day working week; I'm regrettably informing you that Thursdays at my place are going to be cut from weekly to monthly.

I'm now putting the call out there to any cool ppl who want to participate in the 'Thursday night thing'. If anyone wants to volunteer their house, then comment on this post and let me know. Even if someone else wants to do monthly as well, then we could work out a fortnightly thing between us (my place, two weeks, your place, two weeks, my place, etc).

So, there, I've said it. That's my boggle and my beef laid before you.

So starting from this Thursday (that's right baby weeklies are going out with a bang rather than a fizzle) I'm going to defer from Kubrick and bring you guys the much awaited TROPFEST 2006 which came curtesy with The Saturday Age yesterday.

So please, come along and we can discuss the who how where when of the next DVD night.

My place
8.30/9pmish, Thursday 9th March
pls bring a nibble or two

See you there.....!

Beck and Dan's Going Away Party Type Thing

It's less than three weeks until we leave the country. I have been fairly lazy about getting the invitation thingys out so have decided to blog and hope people will see this.
Details:
Saturday the 18th of March at My House
People may turn up at any time as long as it's after 2pm.
It's not so much of a party as a 'drop in and say goodbye and perhaps have a coffee and some cake' type thing.
Anyhoo just come along because we want to see everyone before we go and it's a chance to make sure we have contact details so you know what we're doing and we know what you're doing (if you want us to know).
For further information call of email me at boo underscore beckk at hotmail dot com
